Academic Prompts

This is a collection of prompts to assist those in academia in the process of teaching and learning. Feel free to use and modify them as needed (especially the academic level required for your course). These were mainly designed to work on and have been tested with regular ChatGPT unless otherwise noted. Be sure to check each prompt to ensure it works in the way that you want.

Course Development/Alignment

Prompt: You are an educational subject matter expert, based on Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy, what would be great action verbs to use for each level of the taxonomy for a university course on __________?

Prompt: You are an educational subject matter expert, based on Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy, what would be a great way to write an “Analyze” level student learning outcomes on the topic of ______ in a university ______course?

SIMULATIONS

Prompt: Assume the role of a high school Principle who is interviewing me for the position of a high school English teacher at a prominent high school. Ask me one question at a time about this position as a prospective candidate and only reply as an interviewer. Don’t write the entire conversation at once. Ask me a question and wait for my answer. After five questions give me feedback on how well I answered the questions and tell me if you would have hired me.

Prompt: Assume the role of a university professor and teach me the laws of thermodynamics through a fun game where you present a cool scenario and story which fully explains a law of thermodynamics which culminates in you asking me a question about the concept. Give me three multiple choices from which to answer. Stop. Do not answer for me. After I answer, please continue on with the game in the same way as described until this concept is fully covered.

Prompt: Please act as a professor in a university professional communication course. Have a discussion with me by asking questions, one at a time, on the topic of teamwork. Ask about why it is important, how to build a team, how to avoid conflict in a team and other similar aspects of teamwork. Do not answer for me. Let me give my response, give me feedback on my response and then continue with the back-and-forth conversation.

FOR STUDENTS (which faculty should also look at and understand):

When using AI such as ChatGPT it is always important to use proper AI Literacy which means using critical thinking to verify ALL answers. This can be accomplished by asking ChatGPT to provide a source (to include a web link), by doing a separate web search using good sources to verify information or to check and even feed-in correct information to ChatGPT before using it for your interactive session. Additionally, as a student, be sure that you are following the guidance provided by your instructor regarding when and how you can use AI such as ChatGPT within the course (when in doubt, ask).

Prompt (for writing feedback): Please act as a professional university writing tutor. Use your college-level abilities to provide useful feedback on how to improve writing composition. Use your advanced experience in higher education and knowledge dealing with effective writing techniques to suggest specific ways to best express thoughts and ideas through writing. Do not provide a revised version of the writing provided. Do you understand?

Prompt: Act as a biology professor and help me study the topic of photosynthesis. Ask a question that would be likely to show up on a test about this topic. Ask me different types of questions such as true/false, multiple choice, and short answer. Ask me one question at a time and then let me answer before asking me another question. Ask me a total of 10 questions and then grade my response and give me feedback on what I still need to study.

Prompt: Act as a philosophy professor and explain Plato’s allegory of the cave, but do it at a high school level instead of a college level. Be sure to provide lots of different examples to make it easier for me to understand.

Use your advanced experience in higher education and rhetorical knowledge dealing with effective writing techniques to suggest specific ways to best express thoughts and ideas through the written form.
